The importance of caravan insurance
If you like spending your holidays in your caravan, either touring or staying in a camping ground you probably want your caravan to be insured with good caravan insurance and with a premium as low as possible.
Traditional caravan insurance policies will be very similar of course and so will be their benefits, yet you still have to compare several companies and the service they offer to find the policy that suits your needs the best. What counts is that you get value for your money.
If you plan to cross an international border, for example into Canada or Mexico, or around Europe, be sure to check that the policy provides coverage, all too often budget caravan insurance will be home country only, and since a caravan is an asset, and may contain valuable belongings you’d be well advised to make sure you won’t have trouble in the event you need to make a claim.
Another aspect of caravan insurance is the “new for old” coverage for the content and belongings of the caravan. When something is stolen or damaged some insurance companies offer to replace the stolen or damaged goods with new. That is what they call new for old coverage. It’s obvious that this affects the amount of money you will receive in case of a claim and consequently the premium of this kind of coverage will be higher.
By contrast, many insurers replace like with like, thus a two year old video camera could well be replaced with another two year old video camera. These policies are also likely to replace an old caravan with another of equal age or condition. A policy that considers wear and tear is likely going to be more economical, but is it what you want?
Be aware that insurance companies frequently demand certain criteria be fulfilled before they will provide caravan insurance, such as using certain security devices to prevent or discourage theft. So it might be necessary to buy a good hitchlock if you have a caravan that is often detached from your car. Wheel clamps may also be required when your caravan is left unattended.
Finally take a closer look at the insurance company itself. Are they reliable people? How many years have they been in business? Are they a major or niche insurer, or indeed just a club insurance program without solid foundations. For most people, losing their caravan while on holiday would be disastrous, so choose your policy carefully.
