Kitchen Composting Options
Though garden composting is extremely popular (and rightly so), there are those of us without enough outside space to place a garden composter. For them, the only option is kitchen composting indoors. There are a few systems for turning kitchen scraps and organic waste into usable compost, and here we will take a look at them.
- Automatic Kitchen Composter from NatureMill. This is a completely automated system. A small insulated box is placed somewhere convenient such as in an under-counter cupboard. It plugs into the mains to run a small fan and rotation system. A drawer at the top is where you place all your kitchen scraps. Then the automatic kitchen composter simply turns to waste into usable finished compost in a couple of weeks. The finished material drops down into a lower chamber so you all you need do is empty it as needed. There is no maintenance and the machine can be situated inside or out. Being a continuous cycle method of kitchen composting you only need one bin to digest all your food waste all year long.
- Bokashi Kitchen Composter. These are plastic buckets with a well-sealed lid and a spigot at the base. You add all yoru kitchen waste plus a sprinkle of ‘bokashi powder’ to get the process of anaerobic composting started. Once the bin is full, you seal and leave for a fortnight. Then the material can be placed outside in the garden or in pots and planters as a nutritious soil en-richer and plant food. The Bokashi Bucket does not create compost as we are used too. Instead it basically pickles the food so it is harmless (bacteria are destroyed) and not of interest to pests. Some people put the pickled material into a traditional garden compost bin knowing it will not attract vermin. Others dig it into shallow trenches in the garden planting beds and others put it into pots and containers.
So you see even without a garden you can recycle all your kitchen scraps easily with a kitchen composter.
