Heartburn is a common every day occurrence. You can tell it is an unpleasant experience because there are so many different commercials trying to push products that claim to provide instant relief to relief that lasts for hours. Here are four things you should know about heartburn, especially if you or someone you know has chronic heartburn.

The medical term for this disease is called GERD or gastroesophageal reflux disease. Once you get to this stage you could be causing potentially severe damage to your esophagus.

Not only do you have the burning sensation in your throat, sometimes you can having a burning sharp sensation in the chest creating the false impression you are having chest pain. There are inherent dangers in this. Many people who suffer from chest pain are in denial and try to rationalize it off as something else, sometimes acid reflux. Obviously, if you are truly having a heart attack instead of heartburn, you could be setting yourself up for a fatal or life changing mistake! How do you know the difference? Even if you’ve had acid reflux for a long time, you can’t truly know which one you are experiencing. Even doctors sometimes will ignore looking at if you are having heart problems if you are have chronic heartburn. Properly treat your heartburn so it does not become a regular occurrence. It can help keep you from being fooled.
3. In the most severe cases, not treating your heartburn can lead to acid reflux surgery. While this is rare nowadays, it is still a possibility. The LES or lower esophageal sphincter can get damaged over time to the point where surgery is one of your few options left. This surgery can be costly and there are risks that are involved with any surgery. This extreme can almost always be avoided if you take care of your heartburn. There are plenty of heartburn remedies you can choose from that can keep you from having to go down this path.
4. Continuing on with the last point, one of the things you should know about heartburn is that you can treat it without having to have any risks. There are several cures for heartburn you can use to get rid of it’s fiery symptoms. You can use modern remedies such as over the counter antacids or natural remedies remedies such as chamomile, peppermint, water, and ginger just to name a few. Sometimes a change in dietary habits can be enough to fix the problem. There really is no reason to have your current heartburn situation grow worse.
