Eco Friendly Cleaning Part Two
Eco Friendly Cleaning is all about reducing our impact on the earth and also improving safety and health for ourselves and our families. Of course buying Green Cleaners is a great start, but there is more to it than simply switching brands. To really improve the ‘greenness’ of our housework there are a number of additional things we can do.
Part One in the Eco Friendly Cleaning series here looked at checking out those labels. In fact, never take anything for granted as the fronts of bottles are designed to sell not to inform. Part Two in the series is all about thinking ‘out of the box’. I know it is a tiresome cliche but its true, we need to look beyond simply picking up a greener packet from the grocery store.
Eco Friendly Cleaning #2 Be Experimental
Whilst we do not all have time to come up with a myriad of exciting homemade recipes for organic cleaning products, there are many simple and straightforward cleaners we already own but simply fail to use to their full potential. Things like vinegar, salt, baking soda and lemon juice can all be used as standalone effective cleaners. Using items suitable for the table means using things that are about as safe as you can possibly find.
There are no added perfumes or hidden ingredients you would not wish to be around, so kitchen cupboard items make great safe cleaners if you know how to use them. I am not suggesting you ditch store bought green cleaners altogether. But if you use a little lemon juice to make your sink sparkle you will safe a packet on purpose made stainless steel polish and you will also be saving packaging and chemical production too.
Think about what cleaning jobs could be simplified then think about the attributes of these natural homemade remedies. Acidic items such as citrus juice or vinegar will cut through grease and bring things up to a shine. In addition they are mildly antibacterial so can be used as a mild multi surface disinfectant that won’t leave any nasty chemical residues.
Salt and baking powder are granular so can be used as effective scouring powders in the bathroom or kitchen. Baking soda absorbs odours so could be used on carpets or in the garbage pail. Salt is extremely antibacterial (its why we use it to preserve foods) and so can deal with cleaning cutting boards and similar items.
Experimenting with your green cleaning to utilise cheap natural products you already have as Simple Green Cleaners gives you more money in your pocket to buy All Natural purpose made Green Cleaners you cannot replace. So get imaginative to make your Cleaning Eco Friendly.
