Eco Friendly Cleaning Part One

Eco Friendly Cleaning is not just about spending lots of money to replace all your traditional products with new Green Cleaners.  There is far more to it than that and to really make an impact on your carbon footprint and reduce your negative impact on the environment takes a little more thought.

Here is Part One in my Eco Friendly Cleaning series of articles.

Eco Friendly Cleaning #1 Read the Labels

Manufacturers of cleaning products understand we all like to appear a little greener nowadays and they do their best to make sure we feel greener by spending our money with them.  But all is often not as it seems.  The only way to really know how Eco Friendly your cleaning products are is to read the labels, and to read them thoroughly.

Features posted on the front are simply sales talk.  Thinks like natural plant oils, and essential oils do not mean very much if the rest of the ingredients are standard.  But they sell.  Something which smells of citrus because it has lemon essential oils in it can easily be a petrochemical derived detergent with added ammonia, sulphates or whatever else.

The only natural cleaners are All Natural Cleaners.  If you fancy using something plant based check it is all plant based.  Otherwise it may be no better than the conventional alternative.

Don’t forget you’re not just looking to see what ingredients are included in that Eco Friendly Cleaning product either.  You should be able to see whether those ingredients are biodegradable too.  And, remember, easily or readily biodegradable is the best kind of ingredient.   Most things will break down eventually, but will it degrade quickly and easily?  That is the important thing.

While you’re checking labels consider where this Eco Friendly Cleaning Product is made too.  Local is always best as reduced transportation means less energy involved in the total production and distribution of any product.

In addition check your Eco Friendly Cleaning Products are concentrated.  This saves you resources, with less time and energy spent going to the store to buy green cleaners and saves packaging and transportation to distribute the goods to stores in the first place.
