Dance Classes Can Get You Fit!

Some of us are just not into sport. My eyes glaze over as soon as anyone starts talking about teams chasing a poor innocent ball, and I absolutely hate the whole gym scene! Fortunately although dancing falls firmly in the fun, social and non-sporty activity list for me – it is also a very good form of getting and staying fit. And you don’t have to start at age 6 and be super flexible and skinny either.

Name a style of music and there is a form of dance that goes with it. Whether you want to spin on your head with hip-hop or dance a sultry Argentine tango there is a style of dance that will appeal. There is dance that happens in groups, there is solo forms and there is partner dancing.  If you are super-inflexible and a few pounds over weight then don’t start with ballet or jazz! Instead maybe consider a social rock and roll class or a folk dance event.

Dance spans the gap between exercise and social activity -that’s why you can go out for an evening’s dancing and come home realising that you ache all over and are dehydrated, and you hardly drank any alcohol at all! Exercise while having fun is hardly like exercise at all – and that’s why its so effective.

More than giving you a generally good cardio-vascular workout and improving your muscle strength and flexibility, dancing will also make you feel good because of the natural high that most human’s get moving to music. Dance is one of primitive man’s early inventions and all that has really happened over the years is the level of sophistication has improved.

Be warned though – dancing is strangely addictive and you can easily find yourself out seeking local dancing lessons for every night of the week!
