All That’s Olive

black olivesSo I guess, first things first, a little introduction to the All That’s Olive site…

Well firstly, we just love olives! So much so in fact, that we’re lucky enough to live surrounded by them. However, not everyone gets to live on a mountain near the Med, so not everyone gets to see olives on the tree. That doesn’t mean though that everyone can’t enjoy these tasty morsels, or the health giving oil they produce.

I should be honest and mention that we haven’t always been olive lovers.  Olive oil has always been a firm favorite, but too many close encounters with inferior cans of preserved fruits left me a little cold for years. However, a nagging mother that simply refused to believe I didn’t enjoy olives kept on at me until now I am a total convert.

Learning to Love Olives

The simple way to learn to love olives, is to first begin with their oil. And, I don’t mean generic boring old mixed up olive oil for cooking either. Get yourself something a little more special. It simply must be extra virgin, and ideally from a named olive variety. That way you can adorn your simple green salad with something sparkling, shining and simply brilliant. Try a few different types and naturally get a taste for olives.

The next step is to add reasonable quality olives to your tomato sauces when cooking at home. The sauce will soften their flavor somewhat and allow you to slowly gain an appreciation of their fruitful yumminess.

Then its on to serious olive eating! Some enjoy those stuffed with pimento, garlic or anchovy. To me though, the very best olive is a little more natural; still with its stone intact so the flesh hasn’t been squished or bruised. I know some might think the stones get in the way of enjoying your meal, but frankly it isn’t that messy and it is the way nature intended the olive to be!

Now, onto stoning and creating beautiful olive pastes (or buying some in), shining with oil, crunchy with pine nuts and fresh with basil.  Sunshine in a bowl and the very best pasta sauce there is!
